Animation X Live Action? Video Marketing Examples #32

Obligatory disclaimer: This isn't an ad or sponsored content. We simply wanted to share this analysis with you as a great, recent example of video marketing.

In a recent email, we showed plenty of love for the BBC’s design theme for its coverage of EURO 2020.

This week we thought we’d focus on their broadcast competitors here in the UK - ITV - who’ve gone in a different, but equally interesting, direction with their titles. (And yes, it also includes animation!)

Interestingly, though, it offers quite an unusual answer to a common question.

People often ask ‘animation or live action? But do they have to be mutually exclusive? Apparently not - ITV have chosen to mix the two.

It’s quite a technical challenge - requiring footage to be filmed in such a way to make animation possible during post-production - but it can absolutely be done. And the end product can look amazing.

Check out the titles below...

It’s hard not to be impressed by the technical feat of an animated Marcus Rashford delivering an animated hot meal to live-action children! (And is there a political message buried somewhere in that visual?!)

As you can see, the extra bits of animation on screen not only reinforce the narrative of the video - they make the video much more interesting visually, increasing its ‘stickiness,’ and power to hold attention.

All we had to do here was make a rough plan for some of the ways we could augment the footage with animation, ensuring our MD Matt’s hand gestures helped facilitate this. We then edited the footage with illustration and animation to help reinforce the story.

So if you’re stuck between animation and live action, remember, the answer might lie somewhere in the middle!
