Big Game, Big Ads! Video Marketing Examples #57

Obligatory disclaimer: This isn't an ad or sponsored content. We simply wanted to share this analysis with you as a great, recent example of video marketing.

‘The Super Bowl’: in every way, it’s more than just a football game.

If nothing else, it’s become an annual marketing event in its own right.

A typical 30-second ad spot during the game on Sunday night would have set you back a cool $6.5m - a $1 million rise from last year and an increase of 195% since 2002. (source)

Since it’s such a huge event with global reach, brands want to put their best foot forward.

And for marketing nerds like us, the ads shown throughout the game - viewed individually and as a collective - often act as a bellwether for the ad industry as a whole.

They tell us where brands are right now, and where things might be going in the months and years ahead.

Keeping it light

So it was interesting to note that, in contrast to last year, there was hardly any mention of the pandemic and its challenges.

Instead, ad after ad seemed to be light in theme, big on humour, heavy on nostalgia (The Sopranos and Dr Evil, anyone?) - with the usual liberal splashing of celebrity stardust from the likes of Arnie, Idris Elba, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, Serena Williams, Miley Cyrus and dozens more.

Here are a few of our favourite ads to check out on your next coffee break:

Amazon

Chevrolet

Budweiser

Uber Eats

Lay’s

McDonald’s

FTX

General Motors

eToro

Moving past the gloom?

The message from these ads?

It’s been a scary, stressful, worrying time but as brands it’s time to look past that, to a brighter future (and include the past, too - nostalgia is a theme in many of the ads above!)

For your next campaign, keep it light, make it fun, and be relatable.
