Find your (re)purpose - Video Marketing Examples #38

Obligatory disclaimer: This isn't an ad or sponsored content. We simply wanted to share this analysis with you as a great, recent example of video marketing.

UK comedian Ricky Gervais didn’t invent podcasts - but he certainly played a key role in their transition to mainstream popularity.

His infamous chats with colleagues Steve Merchant and Karl Pilkington have been downloaded hundreds of millions of times in audio form and the team was, at one point, in the Guinness Book of World Records for creating the most downloaded podcast of all time.

Not content with dominating that channel, Gervais and co signed up to turn highlights of the podcast into an animated television show - also called ‘The Ricky Gervais Show.’

The show overlaid the original audio from the podcasts with Hanna Barbera-style characters.

It was a runaway success, running for 39 episodes, winning an Emmy, and reaching a phenomenal worldwide TV audience.

And why are we telling you all this?

Well, it’s a classic example of content repurposing: taking an established piece of content, spending some time adapting it - and then publishing it via other channels to amplify its reach and success, without doing all the work again.

This is important, because It takes a LOT of time and hard work to create content.

From planning, to research, through to execution - we all know that the whole process can take many hours.

So, a genuine question: are you making the most of all that hard work?

To put it simply:

A great blog post can be a great vlog video (and vice versa!)

Snippets of your long-form videos can be cut up into shorter clips for social media, driving views for the main content...

A great ‘About us’ page can form the basis of a beautiful explainer video to be shared everywhere from YouTube to your email signatures.

With just a little thought and creativity, your ebooks and case studies can make great webinars, your podcasts can become animated videos, your written reviews can be converted into video testimonials, and your painstakingly-researched original data can become eyecatching illustrations and animated graphics for your audience to feast on.

It’s about taking work you’re most proud of - and ideally work that you already know can be successful - and doing an extra 10% to get it in front of as wide an audience as possible.

Ask yourself:

  • What are your top 5 blog posts, ebooks, case studies, right now?

  • Where can that content be found?

  • Where can it not be found?

  • What would be required to repurpose your successful content so it can be found in those other places?

  • How else could you use the awesome work you’ve already done on your content, to benefit your business and help your audience?
