Football in motion: Video Marketing Examples #30

Obligatory disclaimer: This isn't an ad or sponsored content. We simply wanted to share this analysis with you as a great, recent example of video marketing.

After an incredibly difficult year, with postponements galore, large swathes of the world are - at last -  gripped by long-awaited international football tournaments.

Both the Copa America, and the European Championships (Euro 2020) - delayed by 12 months due to the pandemic - kicked off over the weekend, and football fans are enraptured.

Here in Europe, the Euros are a big deal. Broadcasters command huge viewing figures as the world stops to watch - and mega-brands build campaigns and product ranges to tap into the fever pitch excitement that grips the competing nations.

Each broadcaster buys the rights to broadcast match footage recorded and fed into them by UEFA.

But beyond this, they have a lot of flexibility to produce the coverage in different ways.

They build their own team of hosts and pundits to analyse the action.

And they create their own visual themes, too. This extends from the titles at the beginning of the programme, through to on-screen titles and graphics throughout.

We have to say - we’re absolutely blown away by the BBC’s efforts here. They have a long tradition of creating iconic title packages that tap into the national consciousness, dating back to Italia 90.

This year’s effort channels the power of animation to encapsulate the vibrant cultures and colours that will be present at the tournament, hosted in 11 cities across the continent...

This, on its own, is nice enough.

But the theme extends right through the programming, including team lineups with player illustrations that loosely match the aesthetic. These look like edited photos rather than hand-drawn illustrations, but even so, with 24 nations involved, and a 26-man squad for each team, this means 624 players to represent.

Feeling inspired?

For us the BBC have absolutely knocked it out of the park here. It just shows the extent to which a bit of design and animation can really differentiate from your competition - and help you bring a world of colour and excitement to life so much more effectively than live action.

Wherever you are in the world - and however invested you are in the summer’s football festivities - we’d love to talk to YOU about ways we could help infuse YOUR brand with colour and excitement.
