Picasso’s Bull: Video Marketing Examples #44
Obligatory disclaimer: This isn't an ad or sponsored content. We simply wanted to share this analysis with you as a great, recent example of video marketing.
For modern marketers, the 1940s might seem a strange place to find inspiration!
But this week we wanted to channel some wisdom from the legendary Pablo Picasso, and particularly The Bull - his series of 11 lithographs, created in 1945.
If you’re not familiar with this work, Picasso essentially started with a highly detailed illustration with accurate features and some subtle shadowing…

Then, with each lithograph in the series, the bull takes on a more exaggerated, simplified form - stripping away the detail, before concluding with a simple line drawing that depicts the 'essence' of the bull.

This is a real object lesson for marketers. Working at the top of the funnel, when you’re looking to introduce your offering and ‘hook’ your audience, simplification is key.
Take this ad for Google’s 4A phone, for example...
At this point, does the audience really need to know the full phone specifications; the dimensions, the weight, the screen size, the camera specs?
No: they simply need to know:
It’s been described (impartially) as Google’s best phone in years
What it looks like
The price
Google follow this up with a slightly prolonged 30 second clip that introduces some more specific features…
From there, they can decide whether to create even longer-form video, or rely on the customer to do their own research.
But: at the top of the funnel, they know how important it is to keep it simple.
They know that they need to give their audience THIS…

And THIS can follow later...
