Retro appeal - Video Marketing Examples #131

Obligatory disclaimer: This isn't an ad or sponsored content. We simply wanted to share this analysis with you as a great, recent example of video marketing.

There’s something perpetually funny and nostalgic about the 80s and early 90s.

Shell suits. Big office phones. Those weird suspender things that held up your trousers. Teletext.

McDonalds UK have gone deep into the treasure trove of 80s and 90s nostalgia to create a series of fun, engaging ads with a simple message: Some attitudes about McDonalds food are as outdated as some of those 80s and 90s tropes!

Feeling inspired?

Tapping into nostalgia can be an incredibly powerful marketing tactic. Humans are wired to feel strong connections and fondness for things that remind us of our past.

So how can this apply to you and your brand? Here are a few ideas:

  • Use nostalgic themes like retro music, clothes, technology etc. to play on the audience's fond memories and create an emotional response. This can trigger positive feelings that get associated with the brand.

  • Show how your brand has evolved over time to contrast against outdated perceptions. McDonalds pokes fun at old assumptions that their food is overly processed. A "we've changed" message resonates - and also demonstrates that you’re ready to listen, and act, on criticism!

  • Feature nostalgic versions of the product or experience. This could mean bringing back retired menu items, old designs, vintage packaging etc. It gives fans a hit of nostalgia.

  • Focus ad campaigns around milestone anniversaries. These are opportunities to celebrate the brand's heritage and history.

  • Collaborate with other nostalgic brands/franchises. Cross-promotions tap into multiple nostalgic audiences.

Nostalgia is powerful because it takes people back to fondly remembered times. Brands can use it to highlight positive changes, reconnect with audiences, and reinforce their legacy.
