Stories with Numbers: Video Marketing Examples #158

Obligatory disclaimer: This isn't an ad or sponsored content. We simply wanted to share this analysis with you as a great, recent example of video marketing.

Numbers on their own can be interesting to some people. 🤓

But, in isolation, they’re nowhere NEAR as engaging as stories, which can grab everyone.

Turning numbers into stories requires context, and perspective. It’s about framing those numbers: getting across what they really mean.

For example, US streaming service Tubi has 75m+ subscribers. But what does that mean? It sounds like a big number, sure - but in isolation, is it really enough to make you think, or feel anything?

But Tubi, wanting to highlight the popularity of their platform - and subscribe to the wisdom of crowds - want you to know what that 75m+ number actually means.

Hence a series of short, funny video ads which tell you that this makes Tubi more popular than divorce…

…more popular than babies…

…more popular than water fountains…

…and even more popular than Old Faithful!

Feeling inspired?

Video is the ultimate storytelling tool.

And numbers CAN be the bedrock of brilliant stories.

Putting them all together is a great recipe for success: it gives you a great story, in an engaging package, which can help your audience learn about your brand, product or service, and give you real credibility.

Want to start crafting compelling narratives with your data? Here are some actionable ways you can use your own numbers to tell a story:

  1. Create relatable comparisons: Compare your data to everyday items or experiences to give people a sense of scale: something people can grasp. For example, "Our app has been downloaded more times than there are cars in New York City."

  2. Highlight growth over time: Show how your numbers have changed. A timeline or before-and-after scenario can illustrate your progress and success. For example, "We’ve grown from 100 to 10,000 users in just one year!"

  3. Visual storytelling: Use infographics, charts, and videographics to present your data in a visually engaging way. Visual aids can make complex data more digestible and memorable.

  4. Customer stories and testimonials: Share real stories from your customers that reflect your data. If 90% of users love your product, feature a customer who embodies that sentiment.

  5. Contextualise with industry benchmarks: Compare your numbers to industry standards or competitors to highlight your strengths. For example, you might say "Our response time is twice as fast as the industry average,” or, “Most of our customer support tickets are resolved faster than it takes to stream an episode of Friends on Netflix.”

  6. Show the impact: Use your data to demonstrate the real-world impact of your product or service. For example, "Our software has saved businesses over 10,000 hours of work in the past year,” or “Our paperless strategy has saved the equivalent of 1,000 trees in paper this year.”

By applying these techniques, you can transform raw data into compelling stories that resonate with your audience and amplify your message.
