Tentacles undulating moistly: Video Marketing Examples #84
Obligatory disclaimer: This isn't an ad or sponsored content. We simply wanted to share this analysis with you as a great, recent example of video marketing.
1980s sci-fi nostalgia-fest Stranger Things recently became the most streamed show in Netflix history.
And amidst the thousands of online column inches, fan theories and reviews, an interesting story caught our eye:
People couldn’t stop talking about the captions!
They’re so viscerally descriptive and littered with adverbs that people noticed and started tweeting about them…

The above stills are just a few examples. The full set of titles covers everything from ‘wet writhing' to 'dissonant gurgling' in an evocative, text-based effort to recreate the show’s immersive soundtrack.
The importance (and opportunity!) of accessibility
People often talk about ‘accessibility’ solely as something to enhance the experience of a narrow subset of your audience: those who are deaf, or hard-of-hearing.
What this story proves is that accessibility can enhance video content for a really wide audience: plenty of those commenting on the captions were people who chose to watch the show with subtitles, rather than it being a necessity.
It also demonstrates that rather than being a box-tick, and some kind of barrier to creativity - accessibility actually offers an array of opportunities to be more creative, and make more of an impact within your target audience and beyond.
Whether it’s super-descriptive captions that viscerally replicate a video soundtrack, on-screen subtitles in colours and fonts that match your brand, paying for titles that translate your video into key languages for international audiences, or a whole host of other accessibility options, accessibility is a big deal, and not something you can afford to ignore!
