Topical & timely: Video Marketing Examples #54

Obligatory disclaimer: This isn't an ad or sponsored content. We simply wanted to share this analysis with you as a great, recent example of video marketing.

This past Monday saw the passing of nobody’s favourite holiday of the year: ‘Blue Monday’.

The third Monday in January gets this name because, according to some pretty sketchy science (!) it’s supposedly the most depressing day of the whole year.

It was interesting to see UK charity Samaritans mark the occasion: they put together, admittedly, a fairly no-frills video, debunking the idea of Blue Monday, and instead encouraging people to celebrate “Brew Monday” with a check in and a chat.

The video, featuring famous faces such as Julie Walters, Stevie Basaula, Keith Lemon and James Acaster, reminds people that mental health problems occur all year round - which is, of course, a key reason why the Samaritans charity exists and a key part of their work.

Where are we going with this? Well, we all know, timely and topical marketing can be incredibly powerful.

And, like in this case, we’re not just talking the well-known and widely celebrated stuff that everyone’s all over. There’s literally a whole calendar of weird, wonderful, obscure dates out there.

For example, did you know that - according to the handy website Days of the Year - yesterday was:

  • National Beer Can Appreciation Day

  • Global Belly Laugh Day

  • National Peanut Butter Day

  • and National Talk Like a Grizzled Prospector Day?

Did you know that the whole month of January is “International Creativity Month” and “National Soup Month” plus, of course, “Veganuary.”

Many of these occasions are totally ‘out there’ and will have no relevance to your brand or audience.

But taking a look at the calendar, you might just come across an occasion that has perfect synergy with your brand.

Something that allows you to create content that says something about your values and what you care about - or just have a little fun.

Some more topical examples include…

Apple - International Women’s Day

Subaru - National Make a Dog’s Day

Islands - Talk Like a Pirate Day

UPS - World Emoji Day

Jameson Irish Whiskey - World Beard Day

Nestlé - International Coffee Day

Bottom line: If you’re looking for some inspo for your next campaign, be it on social media or elsewhere, why not head to https://www.daysoftheyear.com/ and look at what’s coming up in the next few weeks and months, that aligns (even loosely) with your core values as a brand?

And when you’ve done that - and you’re ready to start work on your cool animated video to commemorate your chosen occasion - click the button below, and let’s get to work!
