We, The People! Video Marketing Examples #36
Obligatory disclaimer: This isn't an ad or sponsored content. We simply wanted to share this analysis with you as a great, recent example of video marketing.
“How do you get kids to actually click on something about civics (voting, taxes, free speech) in this day and age?”
That was the question posed by TV screenwriter and producer, Chris Nee, recently.
And it’s a question which, tweaked slightly, some of you might recognise. How do you get your audience to engage with something that you know is important - but to your audience, right now it seems dry, or complex, or difficult?
Nee’s answer comes in the form of a new Netflix animated music video series called We, The People, co-produced by Barack and Michelle Obama and released earlier this month. Take a look at the trailer below...
The series features music from artists like Brandi Carlile, H.E.R., Janelle Monae and Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as a diverse array of illustration and animation styles which really show off the versatility of our medium.
The real inspiration for us comes from this idea of packaging up initially unpalatable ideas and concepts - into a slick, beautifully branded, animated bundle that oozes ‘cool’. It’s something we’ve had lots of experience with over the years.
Just like kids who need to be educated about civic issues, your audience no doubt has other priorities, distractions and things they’d like to be doing instead.
Like those kids, some of your audience might be willing to read a textbook, browse a website or do their own heavy lifting - but most will find the path of least resistance and do something else instead. (Likely something fun!)
And just like We, The People demonstrates, animation can be a sort of ‘trojan horse’ that grabs the attention of your audience simply because it looks and feels colourful, vibrant, youthful and intense.
Once they’re watching, animation can work further magic. It illustrates and builds worlds, it imparts information accessibly, it tells stories that build empathy and it makes people care. It can inspire, inform, educate, captivate, persuade. It can create lightbulb moments that quite literally change lives for the better.
